Twin Cities Fishstocking Society
A short note on our activities,
We formed in 1994, to date we’ve released approx 250000 fish into Aplins, Gleesons and Blacks weirs.
Also the Haughton and Alligator systems have been stocked to a lesser degree.
We released approx 5000 jacks into Aplins about 5 years ago, these fish would now be well above legal size. Initially we stocked barra’s in the 5cm class range, though with advice from DPI the average size class was increased to 30cm about 4yrs ago,
Because research indicated survivability increased markedly in this size range.
All fish released since the size upgrade are tagged.
Tag returns since indicate fish have been flushed from blacks to the salt below Aplins during flood events.
We are currently assisting James Cook University with an acoustic tag program of large fish (70 – 110cm) released into the tidal reaches of Ross river.
These fish are detected by acoustic receivers when in range and their movements tracked, this project is to give us a clearer picture of large fish movements once into the open system.
The largest fish to date electro-fished in the weirs is about 130cm and weighing approx 30kg plus.
